Believe it or not, Memorial Day is just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to start planning what events and activities you will be able to take part in. Today we’re going to help you find the best 2016 Memorial Day events in the Bay Area. From parades and festivals to tributes and memorial services, there is something for everyone to take part in.
35th Annual Civil War Battles & Encampment
Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, CA is hosting their annual Civil War Battles and Encampment. Union and Confederate soldiers will re-make history right before your eyes. You can also take a ride on the 1880s “iron horse” through an ancient redwood forest and get a look at a soldier’s every day life. You can also enjoy the Chuck Wagon Barbecue. This event takes place May 28-30.
Memorial Day Remembrance in Santa Cruz
Another event is the 149th Annual Memorial Day Remembrance in Evergreen Cemetery in Santa Cruz, CA. This traditional remembrance ceremony will take place Monday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first hour will feature musical and spoken tributes from local community leaders, veterans and military members. Afterwards there will be a BBQ luncheon at the Portuguese Hall, which only costs $5 a person.
Memorial Day Ceremony at the National Cemetery in San Francisco
This is the largest Bay Area event on Memorial Day. The ceremony starts with a parade through the Presidio at 10:30 a.m., which starts at the Main Post and ends at the National Cemetery. The parade lasts about 30 minutes and then it’s on to the formal program, which features several speakers including local politicians and veterans. After that there is a 21-Gun Salute followed the opportunity to take a tour of the National Cemetery.
